Time commitment: 1 month
Action for Singapore Dogs Society (ASD) was established in December 2000 as a non-profit organisation and officially registered with the Registry Of Societies in 2002. We are a charity and one of the most established dog welfare groups in Singapore with 450 registered members and a pool of about 400 volunteers. We also have a Facebook audience of over 31,000 followers and you can also follow us on Instagram. Our mission is to improve the welfare of stray and abandoned dogs in Singapore and we fulfill this through the rescuing and rehoming of such dogs, advocating sterilisation as a means of controlling the stray dog population, promoting responsible pet ownership, and highlighting the virtues of our local cross breed dogs aka Singapore Specials. We also collaborate with the authorities and other organisations to alleviate the plight of the local stray dog population that is estimated to be between 8,000 and 10,000 currently.
- Being a foster parent involves caring for and nurturing a puppy or dog for a minimum period of 1 month in your home. During this time, foster parents need to feed the dog regularly with nutritious food and report symptoms of illness or behavioural problems.
- Foster parents should also help in domesticating the dog, in terms of paper training him/her, teaching him/her not to bark excessively and not to chew on things. There should also be plenty of interaction with him/her so that he/she is people and dog friendly.
- Foster parents need to have a patient, forgiving and tolerant attitude. Common challenges posed by the dog include urinating and defecating at many spots, barking excessively, whining at night, biting or chewing on shoes, slippers, the legs of tables and chairs.
Experience with dogs is a plus. If you do not have experience, we will guide you along the way. Medical aid or necessary aid of sorts will be provided by ASD.
What's the impact?
The aim of our foster programme is to prepare dogs for a life in a caring home environment, offering them exercise, training, grooming, proper healthcare and diet to turn them into the best pet they can be and enhance their chances for adoption. It holds responsibilities but can be very rewarding as it helps us give dogs a Second Chance at Life but getting them off the street.
