RDA Singapore is the only charity in Singapore to provide free horse-riding therapy (also known as hippotherapy or equine-assisted therapy) for children and adults with disabilities. We have been providing the therapy since 1982 and 2017 marks the 35th anniversary of RDA Singapore. Over these 35 years, more than 6,000 riders have benefitted from our unique form of horse-riding therapy.
As much as possible, we will pair the same rider (beneficiary) with the same volunteers and horse. This is to allow the volunteers and rider to bond with each other and for the volunteers to track the progress made by the rider. For new volunteers, we would like you to start as side-walkers first.
The role of a side-walker is multi-faceted. You act as a big brother or sister to the rider. Getting them ready for the session and walk beside them throughout the session. You will need to keep them engaged and ensure their safety.
When you come for the session, you may need to prepare the indoor riding arena for the session. Then you need to get the riding helmet ready for your rider/s. When the rider is here, you will need to get them ready for the therapy. During the session, you would need to walk beside them, talk to them and get them to join the therapy activities. At the end of the session, you and the other side-walker need to record your observations and see if there is any improvement.
Who can do this:
Anyone who like to work with kids or adults with disabilities and is not afraid of big animal (i.e. horse) is welcomed to join RDA. You must be fit, comfortable with standing/brisk walking for about 45 min to 1.5 hour. You DO NOT NEED to have horse-riding experience!
