Reading with 6-10 year olds - South Central Community Family Service Centre

Time commitment: Once per week; 15 sessions (3hrs weekly)

South Central Community Family Service Centre provides support to the low-income and vulnerable families in our community. While giving support to families who seek help in financial, social or relationship issues, we encourage community self-help and cooperation.

Volunteers must be able to commit for 14 sessions (3hrs) and undergo a 3 hour training session.

Volunteers will read with children (in pairs or in small groups), listen to children reading aloud, engage in discussion with the children to build up their confidence and skills.

Skills needed:
  • Educational attainment: At least O levels or its equivalent.
  • Have understanding of basic grammar usage.
  • Comfortable and adept in English language
  • Patient with children especially when they are unmotivated.
  • Can commit to 15 sessions (3hrs) on Thursday afternoons

Volunteer Tutor English - South Central Community Family Service Centre

Description:
We are a Family Service Centre who works with over 500 families from low income groups. As a voluntary welfare organisation, we work closely with volunteers to support the work that we do with the families and in particular the children.

Key responsibilities:
  • Volunteer will help to guide 2 siblings who are studying in one of the local Primary schools in learning the English Language. Sessions will be held once a week, on Saturdays from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm.

Requirements:
  • Proficiency in the English language.
  • Enjoy working with children. Patience to work with children from challenging family backgrounds. Advantageous if the volunteer is able to befriend the children and instill in them a positive attitude towards learning.

What's the impact?
You will play an integral part in helping the children develop a love for learning, which is a positive move towards poverty transformation.

Description:
South Central Community Family Service Centre provides support to the low-income and vulnerable families in the community. While giving support to families who seek help in financial, social or relationship issues, we encourage community self-help and cooperation.

Key Responsibilities:
Volunteers are required to provide homework support to children from low income families.
These children are from local Primary Schools and are between the ages of 7 to 12.
Subjects include English, Mathematics and Science.
Time: 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm on weekdays
2:00 pm - 4:00 pm on Saturdays

Requirements:
You need to be willing to familiarise yourself with the local school curriculum and syllabus.
Lot of patience to work with the children to not only provide homework support but to befriend and encourage them to work towards achievable educational goals.

What's the impact?
You will play a key role in helping children from disadvantaged family backgrounds discover the job and meaning of learning and help to motivate them to achieve reasonable educational goals. Your role is not only focused on homework support but more importantly one of a befriender.

Description:
South Central Community Family Service Centre provides support to the low-income and vulnerable families in the community. While giving support to families who seek help in financial, social or relationship issues, we encourage community self-help and cooperation.

We are looking for volunteers for our Family Partnership Platform. (FPP). The objective of FPP is to provide encouragement, help, mentoring and befriending to member families by volunteers, supporting them as they journey towards  transformational change in their lives, and with longer term goals of moving out of poverty.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Visit families on a regular basis.
  • Engage family members in casual chit chat.
  • Be an extended family to the family and link between family and the Centre.
  • Provide feedback and raise concerns/needs to staff.

Requirements:
  • 21 years old and above.
  • Fluency in English/Mandarin/Malay/Tamil and/or local Dialects.
  • Patient and have a genuine willingness to listen.
  • Able to work with families from diverse backgrounds and religious beliefs.
  • Comfortable working with families in their residence.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strict compliance to observing confidentiality of information pertaining to the family attached to in the course of volunteering.
  • A good listening ear and an open mind to work with families facing challenging situations, move out of the poverty cycle.

What's the impact:
Volunteer will play a pivotal role in journeying with a family, with the support of staff, towards a transformational change.
